JACOB OSTREICHER RELEASED ON BAIL
HIKIND URGES CONTINUED PRAYERS;
BELIEVES HE’LL BE HOME SOON
After 18 months of wrongful,
unlawful imprisonment in Bolivia, Jacob Ostreicher was released TODAY on bail. Assemblyman
Hikind (D-Brooklyn), a confidant and advocate for the Ostreicher family since
Jacob’s incarceration, called the occasion “the beginning of the end of Jacob
Ostreicher’s nightmare.”
“This is the first really good news we’ve received regarding Jacob and all of us are extremely optimistic,” said the Assemblyman. “We’re hoping to have Jacob reunited with his family in Borough Park very soon.
“I couldn’t be prouder of our community for staying involved with the Ostreichers—for caring as much as they do and constantly keeping Jacob’s situation in mind. Keep praying. The Al-mighty hears us.”
Members of the Ostreicher family are currently in Bolivia where Jacob has reportedly been sentenced to house arrest with bail set at 100,000 Bolivianos ($14,265.30 U.S.)

The Tragedy in Connecticut
The story of the tragedy that occurred in Connecticut has left all of us speechless and deeply wounded. I mourn with the families of the victims and pray that the Al-mighty console them and protect them.If you would like to donate to all the victims' families of the tragedy that took place on December 14 at Sandy Hook School, several charities have taken up the cause. Visit newtown.uwwesternct.org or www.everribbon.com for information.
If you would like to donate directly to the family of the youngest victim, 6-year-old Noah Pozner (may the memory of his pure soul be a blessing), you can make checks out to Congregation Adath Israel of Newtown and write on the MEMO line "For the Family of Noah Pozner." We are told all monies collected will go directly to the family to help support them during this terrible time. Checks should be sent to Congregation Adath Israel, P.O. Box 623, Newtown, CT 06470.
UPDATE 12/20 -- We're told a phoney Noah Pozner site was forced to close down.

Ostreicher Update: A Statement From Sean Penn
We were terribly disappointed to see Jacob Ostreicher's stay in Bolivia extended for even one more minute yesterday, but we are still very hopeful that his time as there is almost over.
As always, we stay in constant contact with Miriam Ostreicher, at the ready to help in any way possible. Miriam asked us to release the following statement from actor/activist Sean Penn, who has done so much to help Jacob:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
In my two brief visits to Bolivia, I have seen a country of rare
beauty. Met many of its extraordinary people, and been fascinated by its
indigenous culture. I have visited twice with President Morales, and
been deeply impressed with his leadership and the soul of his passion to
serve the Revolution and Bolivian People. I am proud to call him my
friend.
However, there is a cancer attacking at Bolivia's heart. The levels of corruption being exposed through the investigation supported by the President, and led by Minister Carlos Romero, has incurred despicable attacks on character by associates of the red (including baseless assertions against Vice Minister Jorge Peres) and ultimately lead to threats upon life. This is creating an existential crisis in Bolivia, and violence against those Bolivians seeking justice is now a real and present threat. But I am not here in a political capacity.
I am here because an American citizen Jacob Ostreicher (a father of five children and grandfather of eleven), and his family are being inhumanely victimized by the red. Jacob and his family are living a nightmare of human abuse, and this is a moment for me to call on my Bolivian brothers and sisters to lend their courage and compassion on behalf of an man KNOWN BY ALL PARTIES to be innocent of any and ALL insinuations of wrong-doing who has been made a pawn of the greedy criminality of the red. He is an innocent man who because of his belief in, and love of Bolivia, has been pillaged, tortured, and denied his most basic human rights. Interpretive Law is being used by the cowardly and the corrupt to deny justice in case of Jacob Ostreicher.
Attorney General Ramiro Guererro is facing an enormous challenge, and I trust his promise that he will move to justice in Jacobs case. An act that would allow resources to focus where so needed for Bolivia, so that Bolivia itself may not suffer as Jacob has. In doing so, and I trust he will, attorney General Guererro may in addition, put at bay the otherwise likely intervention by the Inter American Commission On Human Rights, sparing Bolivia the indignity of intervention, so undeserved by its people or its President.
In an effort to obstruct the investigation of extortion perpetrated by Fernando Rivera and the red, and their implicit ties to imprisoned narco trafficker Maximilian Dorado, judges of the appellate court yesterday, once again used the Ostreicher case to abstract both the existence of the red and its stranglehold on the Bolivian Justice system, and the unequivocal innocence of, and human rights violations against, Jacob Ostreicher.
To be clear, the President of Bolivia is INDEED tasking for justice in this case, but until Jacob is a free man, I must call for international support, as we may find, that any direct Presidential intervention will be used by these corrupt opposition forces to discredit his Presidency as one that undermines the Judiciary. This is a fraudulent tactic and should be cause for grave concern that Bolivia and President Morales may become weakened by this mafia and made vulnerable to its ultimate goals of coup de'tat.
In respect to the courage of President Morales, and those he has tasked to investigate on behalf of justice, and significantly on behalf of the Bolivian people and American citizen Jacob Ostreicher, I ask the world community to stand in solidarity with Bolivia and, I ask President Morales for the immediate release, exoneration, and safe return of Jacob Ostreicher to his family in the United States.
As always, we stay in constant contact with Miriam Ostreicher, at the ready to help in any way possible. Miriam asked us to release the following statement from actor/activist Sean Penn, who has done so much to help Jacob:

HIKIND ISSUES STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO
WEBERMAN GUILTY VERDICT
A guilty verdict came in today following the two-week sex abuse trial of Nechemya Weberman, 54, who was accused of sexually abusing a teenager sent to him for psychological treatment over a three-year period beginning when she was 12.
“As someone who has been involved in this issue from the beginning, I am encouraged by this young lady’s courage in standing up for herself,” said Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn). “I am hopeful that if other young people believe themselves to be victims of abuse that they too will come forward. Silence only protects the guilty.
“Today, we have more education and attention on abuse than we’ve had the past. We’ve made progress. But there’s still a long way to go.”

Jacob Ostreicher’s Freedom: Facts vs. Rumors
It’s wonderful how excited everyone gets when there’s news about Jacob Ostreicher. And the news lately has been very promising. But there’s also rumors flying regarding Jacob’s imminent release that are unnecessary, and which only make it harder for the Ostreicher family because they have to correct the mistruths.
The fact is we are very hopeful that there will be additional positive developments regarding Jacob’s situation soon.
My staff and I are in constant contact with Miriam Ostreicher and we promise to share the news as we receive it. In the meantime, I urge everyone to continue praying for Jacob’s immediate release from Bolivia ; continue thinking positive thoughts for the family. Tracht gut vet zein gut.

HIKIND HOSTS FEMA OFFICIALS TO EXPEDITE COMMUNICATIONS PROCESS
DEADLINES ARE APPROACHING BUT MORE THAN 50%
OF SANDY VICTIMS HAVE NOT FILED
In an on-going effort to aid New Yorkers impacted by Hurricane Sandy, Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) and his staff met with six FEMA officials yesterday to better ensure effective, accessible information to Hurricane Sandy victims who may be eligible for post-disaster financial relief.
“Many people are still confused about FEMA’s process and what they can offer,” said Assemblyman Hikind, who last week announced the addition of Jeanie Silver, a former FEMA employee, to his staff. “People should file with both FEMA and their insurance companies immediately. There are multiple resources available through FEMA that many are unaware of. Anyone who has suffered any sort of damage to their home, car, business, non-profit organization, or anything else may be eligible for a wide range of assistance programs, including low-interest SBA loans, personal property disaster relief, rental assistance, unemployment, medical and dental assistance. The important thing is that you must apply to find out what’s available, and you should be conscious of the deadlines, which are fast approaching.”
Currently, the deadline for individual assistance is December 30, 2012 and the deadline for SBA is December 31, 2012.
There are multiple ways to apply for FEMA assistance:
- Apply Online at DisasterAssistance.gov
- Apply via a smartphone at m.fema.gov
- Apply by phone by calling (800) 621-3362; people with speech or hearing disabilities should call TTY (800) 462-7585.
- Apply directly at a Disaster Recovery Center. DRC’s are one-stop centers that allow you to see many agencies at once and to get face-to-face assistance with your application.
FEMA’s role is to help people return to safe, sanitary and functional homes.
Those in need of assistance or guidance in dealing with FEMA can contact Assemblyman Hikind’s office at 718-853-9616 and ask for Jeanie, or email jeaniesilver2012@gmail.com.

HIKIND CALLS ON PARKS DEPT. TO CUT DANGEROUS TREES, BRANCHES
BEFORE NEXT WEATHER EVENT
BEFORE NEXT WEATHER EVENT
“TAKE THIS IMPORTANT OUNCE OF PREVENTION
BEFORE LIVES ARE LOST”
Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) is calling on the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation to remediate the many trees that were damaged by Sandy but have not fully fallen yet. They are disasters waiting to happen, said the Assemblyman.
“This super storm has taught all of us hard lessons,” said Assemblyman Hikind, “not the least of which is an ounce of prevention is genuinely worth a pound of cure. In a proactive effort to prevent further power outages and, indeed, save lives before the winter is upon us, my staff surveyed Borough Park and Flatbush and found many potentially dangerous and some obviously hazardous trees and tree branches, many damaged by the hurricane and now poised to fall and wreak further havoc with the next big weather event.”
Assemblyman Hikind called on Veronica M. White, NYC Parks Commissioner, to immediately make remediation of the dangerous trees and branches the department’s number one priority. “Before the winter is upon us and the heavy snows fall, I am requesting that the Department of Parks survey the city for the types of hazardous tree situations that my staff has observed,” he said. “The remediation of these problems should be an immediate priority—certainly ahead of planting new trees—as lives can be saved by acting promptly.”
