HIKIND ‘SHOCKED’ AT INADEQUATE RESPONSE
TO ON-GOING ANTI-SEMITIC ATTACKS IN CROWN HEIGHTS

This afternoon, Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) issued the following statement:

“The series of unprovoked attacks in Crown Heights has community members both frightened and dismayed at what they feel is inadequate protection from law enforcement. The New York City Police Department, for whom I have the greatest respect, must seriously address these ongoing attacks on both young and old residents.

“Attacks are occurring regularly, often in broad daylight, by hoodlums who are cheered after assaulting their Jewish neighbors. These aren’t muggings. No money is taken. The assaults are motivated by hate.

“There are no ‘minor’ anti-Semitic incidents. Allowing adults and children to be assaulted without a serious response from law enforcement sends the wrong message and opens up innocent people to more attacks. This must stop and be dealt with immediately.

“I have met with Crown Heights community leaders and the community is united. No one in this city should be forced to live in fear.”

Protesting Nazi War Criminals

HIKIND’S CAMPAIGN TO BRING JUSTICE FOR THE VICTIMS OF NAZI WAR CRIMES TARGETS NAZI IN QUEENS

On Sunday, November 10, the 75th anniversary of Krystallnacht, Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) brought more than 150 yeshiva students as well as five Holocaust victims to rally at the front door of convicted Nazi War Criminal Jakiw Palij. Palij has been identified by the Department of Justice as an armed guard who was actively involved in the extermination of 6,000 men, women and children in the Trawniki labor camp in Poland in November, 1943. The gathering was co-organized by Rabbi Tzvi Friedman of Rambam Mesivta in Lawrence, NY.

Palij was stripped of his United States citizenship in 2003 for failure to disclose that he had been a guard in Trawinki, but with no country willing to take him in, he has continued to reside in New York.
“He came here under a lie and he continues to live here, enjoying the fresh air in Queens,” said Assemblyman Hikind.  “He is living here among us, with his name on his doorbell, and he has nothing to worry about. People have said ‘why are you bothering old men?’ But these are people who were responsible for murdering men, women and children.”

“I am determined to pursue not only this guy, but also Nazis who live in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Michigan,” vowed Hikind.  “I will go there and rally the Jewish communities.  This is alef bais; this is fundamental.  The idea that someone who participated in ‘The Final Solution’ can be living here among us. This goes to the heart and soul of what my parents went through and what so many in our community went through.”

Attacks on Jews in Crown Heights MUST be Addressed

On a regular basis I have been receiving messages from the leaders of the Crown Heights Jewish community regarding attacks on Jews. These aren’t muggings. It isn’t about money. Jews are being attacked and beaten precisely because they are Jews. And the frequency of these attacks is increasing. The situation in Crown Heights is out of control.

I am calling on the Police Commissioner to address this immediately and do whatever is necessary  to protect the innocent men, women and children of Crown Heights from these hate crimes.

I will be in Crown Heights today to meet with people and look further into this.

STAGING RALLY AT NAZI’S HOME TODAY

HIKIND’S CAMPAIGN TO BRING JUSTICE FOR THE VICTIMS OF NAZI WAR CRIMES TARGETS NAZI IN QUEENS

WILL STAGE RALLY AT NAZI’S HOME TODAY

Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) is furious that there are still Nazi war criminals living legally and illegally in the United States—and he’s doing something about it. Beginning this month, the 75th anniversary of the tragedy of Kristallnacht, Assemblyman Hikind is launching a campaign to bring the remaining Nazi war criminals in America to justice.
“People have the nerve to say, ‘They are old now—why bother?’ But what of the hundreds and thousands of innocent victims that were personally tortured and murdered by these criminals? Do we have no obligation to their memories?”

In July, the Associated Press reviewed U.S. Justice Department data and reported that at least 10 suspected Nazi war criminals ordered deported by the U.S. never left the country—and at least four are living here today. “Shockingly, these criminals have remained eligible for public benefits such as Social Security until they exhausted appeals,” said Assemblyman Hikind. “They came here illegally, lied on their registration and naturalization papers, and even after they were caught they were able to take advantage of the system and receive tax-payer benefits. Does it get any more outrageous than that?”

All of the illegal Nazis have been stripped of citizenship and ordered deported. Nevertheless, they have been able to carry on and live out their lives in familiar surroundings. One of the reasons attributed to the illegal Nazis remaining in the U.S. is that their countries of origin do not want them back. This is currently the case of Vladas Zajanckauskas in Sutton, Massachusetts; Theodor Szehinskyj in West Chester, Pennsylvania; John Kalymon in Troy, Michigan; and Jakiw Palij in Queens, New York.

“A Nazi murderer living in Queens,” said Assemblyman Hikind. “Is this a bad joke? If it is, we aren’t laughing.”

While the U.S. can deport these men over evidence of involvement in Nazi war crimes, they cannot put them on trial because their crimes took place outside of the U.S. The responsibility to prosecute is thrust on the countries where the crimes were committed.

“As far as I’m concerned, this farce has gone on too long,” said Assemblyman Hikind. “We don’t want these murderers living among us, among the descendants of the men, women and children their tortured. That is beyond adding insult to injury—it is a mockery. It is our obligation to root out the evil from among us. If their native countries don’t want these Nazi murderers back, then put them on a boat and send them off. They have no right to enjoy the freedoms they denied others.”

This Sunday, Nov. 10, members of the community are encouraged to join Assemblyman Hikind, Rabbi Zev Friedman of Rambam Mesivta in Lawrence, NY, students from Rambam Mesivta, and Holocaust survivors as they stage a rally in front of the home of Nazi War Criminal Jakiw Palij at 10 AM at 33-18 89th St in Jackson Heights, New York.

HIKIND DEMANDS INVESTIGATION INTO NY TOWN’S ‘ACCEPTED’ ANTI-SEMITISM

AS KRISTALLNACHT ANNIVERSARY APPROACHES, HIKIND DEMANDS INVESTIGATION INTO NY TOWN'S 'ACCEPTED' ANTI-SEMITISM

“THIS ISN’T A SERIES OF INCIDENTS—IT’S A CULTURE OF HATE AND INTIMIDATION. PINE BUSH IN 2013 IS GERMANY IN EARLY 1933.”

CALLS ON NY STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL AND U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE TO INVESTIGATE

Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) is calling on New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate the years of anti-Semitic incidents that have occurred in the Pine Bush Central School District in New York State—incidents that have been tolerated by the district and ignored by local officials. A class action suit by three Jewish families whose children have suffered enormously from the tolerated racism in Pine Bush—once home to a local KKK chapter president—has uncovered a culture of tolerated racism that has terrorized local Jewish families for years.

“There are reports about incidents of swastikas, ant-Semitic epithets and nicknames, and jokes about the Holocaust being virtually ignored by the school system,” said Assemblyman Dov Hikind. “And of course it doesn’t end there—when local authorities ignored assault, it inevitably leads to battery, to terroristic threats, to a tolerance of constant intimidation as if that’s an inalienable right. So one Jewish boy gets beaten severely and another Jewish child is withdrawn from school, a third child learns to deny being Jewish and a fourth testifies to feelings of depression and suicide.

“We have a national dialogue about equality for everyone and tolerance for all lifestyles and the long-term damage that bullying does to a child. But here in Pine Bush we discover the worst type of bullying. It is taught by parents, tolerated by the school district, and it has gone on for years without interference from local officials. That is unconscionable.

“You have the local superintendent responding to a parent who complained about her daughter’s harassment, ‘your expectations for changing inbred prejudice may be a bit unrealistic.’ You have testimony from numerous victims that not one or two but 35 students regularly carry out anti-Semitic acts. Threats like ‘Die Jew’ are made and tolerated. A swastika is drawn on a photograph of President Obama’s face and, after reported, left hanging on a wall for a month! You have a seventh grade girl restrained by one student while another draws a swastika on her face!

“This is beyond outrageous. This is heart breaking. This is what those poor Jewish children and their families had to tolerate in Germany in 1933. But we will not stand for this. We will not tolerate Jewish children being used as punching bags. There are laws in this country and it’s time to unmask what’s been going on in Pine Bush, New York and bring law to this town and protection to all of its residents.”

Assemblyman Hikind, the Assistant Majority Leader of the New York State Assembly, represents the largest number of Holocaust survivors in the United States.

HIKIND CONDEMNS BROOKLYN COLLEGE FOR CONTINUED CO-SPONSORSHIP OF ANTI-ISRAEL EVENT

HIKIND CONDEMNS BROOKLYN COLLEGE FOR CONTINUED CO-SPONSORSHIP OF ANTI-ISRAEL EVENT

"SPONSORSHIP IS TANTAMOUNT TO SUPPORT. A CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK HAS NO BUSINESS ESPOUSING HATRED!"

Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) called on Brooklyn College to end its co-sponsorship of yet another hate fest against the State of Israel.  "We respect the freedoms our Constitution affords everyone," said Assemblyman Hikind, "but that in no way condones Brooklyn College's lack of sensitivity in co-sponsoring this event."

On November 14th, Ben White, a known anti-Israel "academic,"  is scheduled to speak as a guest of Students for Justice in Palestine. This is the same group who welcomed Omar Barghouti, founder of BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions), which aims to eliminate the State of Israel from the map.

"Ben White is not just anti-Israel," said the Assemblyman, "he is also an anti-Semite. Last year while advocating a boycott of Israel's Habima Theatre's participation in London's Globe Theatre World Shakespeare Festival, White tweeted the following:  If you need another reason to support a boycott of Habima, I present a massive picture of Howard Jacobson's face. To boycott something based on the appearance of what a Jewish person looks like is no different than Joseph Goebel's classic anti-Semitic propaganda."

"Brooklyn College's continued co-sponsorship of anti-Israel hatefests is abhorrent. It is one thing to support our Constitutional freedoms, it is another thing entirely to take part in biased events. Sponsorship is tantamount to support. A City University of New York has no business espousing hatred. Who will Brooklyn College co-sponsor next year, Bashar al-Assad? Perhaps Ahmadinejad is available?"
